Mash filter is very much like plate and frame filter. The traditional mash filter is made of cast iron which consisting of a series of grid-type plates alternating with hollow frame plates that are suspended on side rails. The modern mash filters differ from the traditional mash filter by plates and frames made of polypropylene and the filter cloths can be fitted into plates or frames instead of hanging over the filter plates.
In the material 5 different types of mash filters are described one traditional and 4 modern types:
1. Plate and Frame (Traditional type)
2. Meura 2001 (Modern types)
3. Ziemann (Modern types)
4. Landaluce λ filter (Modern types)
5. Nortek (Modern types)

Operation Description (Meura 2001 Mash Filter)
1. Filter Empty – the filter is emptied, closed and stand by for filling.
2. Filling of the filter – the filter is filled from the underside at constant flow rate.
3. Filtration – the filtration runs at constant flow rate.
4. Pre-compression – to reduce sparging water and more extract recovery.
5. Sparging – to efficient extract recovery.
6. Compression – to collect the last extract and dry the grains.
7. Drain down – to emptied residual water in the filter.
8. Spent grain discharge – the spent grain bed drops off from the filter, after spent grains discharged, the filter is closed automatically and is ready for the next brew.
9. Cleaning – by soaking the clothes in a caustic solution.
